The system of education in Cyprus

Pre-primary education in Cyprus is open to children over 3 years of age and lasts for one year and is compulsory before entering primary school. The primary school will last for 6 years. This includes Gymnasia (lower secondary education) and Lykeio (high secondary education) and lasts for six years. The DAAE has founded the Educational Evaluation-Accreditation Council, which aims to maintain a constant quality of education in Cyprus and ensure that the facilities and equipment meets these requirements. Since Cyprus became a member of the EU in 2004, the position of higher education in Cyprus has grown and the Open University of Cyprus has opened its doors.

Since English is the language of instruction in many higher education programmes in Cyprus, many international students are educated here. Many foreign students came from Europe, India, Bangladesh and China in 2005-06.
