The system of education in Cyprus
Pre-primary education in Cyprus is open to children over 3 years of age and lasts for one year and is compulsory before entering primary school. The primary school will last for 6 years. At the age of 12, Cypriots are enrolled in secondary school, which offers comprehensive interdisciplinary education with a range of extracurricular activities.
This includes Gymnasia (lower secondary education) and Lykeio (high secondary education) and lasts for six years. Students may attend secondary technical and vocational education instead of three years of Lykeio, which will provide them with the knowledge and skills required to move directly into working life or to pursue further studies.
Higher education in Cyprus
Higher education in Cyprus is funded by both public and private institutions, and the system is under constant growth. Significant steps have been taken by the Ministry of Higher Education (DAAE) in Cyprus to increase funding, study and interest in higher education, with the opening of three state universities.
The DAAE has founded the Educational Evaluation-Accreditation Council, which aims to maintain a constant quality of education in Cyprus and ensure that the facilities and equipment meets these requirements. Since Cyprus became a member of the EU in 2004, the position of higher education in Cyprus has grown and the Open University of Cyprus has opened its doors.
Since English is the language of instruction in many higher education programmes in Cyprus, many international students are educated here. Many foreign students came from Europe, India, Bangladesh and China in 2005-06.
